Sunday 16th March - ***** Racquette walk – very sunny
A very good night and the huskies didn’t keep us awake – they were very
quiet:) It’s another glorious day! After breakfast we packed our lunch
and set out about 10.30 to hire some racquettes (12 euros for both of us).
We bought a pedestrian pass for the chair lift (5 euros each) and were even
allowed to go straight to the front of the queue! They slowed the lift
right down and up we went. Margeriaz is very beautiful with lots of trees
dotted around the snowy slopes and with some very interesting looking
pistes for tomorrow:) When we got to the top they virtually stopped the
lift for us and we hopped off and strapped our racquettes on! We headed up
the piste to start with and over to the edge of a very sheer cliff where
the path meanders along the top. It is absolutely stunning looking out
over the valley! We started walking down, getting used to the snow shoes
– it is a bit weird but easy once you get the hang of it. The worst
thing is that the snow flicks up and goes into the top of your boots. The
people who do it regularly have short gaiters to stop this happening but we
just got soaking wet feet! We stopped fairly near the top to make sure we
got the best view for our lunch. A flock of alpine chough were flying
around having a great time swooping and diving around the cliffs and we
threw some of our roll onto a flat rock and were amazed how close they
landed to us to get it! They are really beautiful, just like black velvet
with bright yellow beaks:) We set out again and after following the cliffs
round further than the actual path we ended up coming down off piste which
was great fun but meant we got a bit lost. There were a couple in front of
us with a baby in a carrier and they had gone the same way so we ended up
following their tracks and we met up with a snow shoe marked path
eventually. It turned out it wasn’t the path we were expecting but was
actually better because it took us past a small gorge and a dripping cave
then ended up with us walking back along the husky sled track. Just as we
were coming to the end of the track and were able to come back up to the
station there was a yell behind us and a sled pulled by 7 beautiful huskies
came flying round the corner! We stayed and watched as the occupants of
the sled swapped for some new ones and took some photos of the dogs who
were having a brilliant time rolling and dancing in the snow – they
really do love it:) As they left 3 more sleds came round the corner each
with 4 dogs pulling. There was an instructor at the front and the next two
sleds had people actually driving them themselves – that must have cost a
lot! Unfortunately our only way out ended up being through the husky
kennels! The lady wasn’t impressed so we just mumbled that we were lost
put our heads down and left as quickly as possible! We took our racquettes
back then back to the van to have a cuppa and rest and dry our feet off!
Lidl Salmon done in foil for tea and the most amazing full moon came up
over the mountains – we are soooooo lucky to have such a charmed life!
